Developing a line of pet-themed designs, a Windsor potter
has carved out a niche for herself while carrying on a family tradition
which began more than 40 years ago.Alice Sacharoff, owner of Cat's Paw
Pottery, first started working with clay in 1966 when she and her mother,
Janice, began taking pottery lessons.Miss Sacharoff, whose mother died
in June, said: "I've
tried to carry on what we started over 40 years ago when we started taking
lessons together in Kingsville. We always liked doing things together and
pottery gave us something we could both enjoy."
Starting out as Le Pot
D'Or, the business made its debut at Art in the Park at Willistead Manor
in 1970 with small art pieces in patterns designed entirely by Janice.
Her Two Cats and the Moon motif was designed for Janice by her father in
the 1920s.
.In 1995, the mother-daughter team renamed their business
Cat's Paw Pottery. "We both loved cats and we felt it was more in
keeping with our business than the previous name."
Miss Sacharoff now devotes
10 per cent of her time to pet-themed pottery and the remainder to more
traditional designs.
Along
with a line of lead-free pottery exclusively for pets,
Alice Sacharoff remains busy making her full line of stoneware pottery, food
and water dishes for dogs as well as cats, kibble canisters, bird feeders,
urns, wind chimes and anything else that a customer might want
.Miss Sacharoff
skipped Art in the Park this year because of her mother's illness but plans
to return next June with another line of pottery and gifts.Miss S
